Volterra prison

Volterra Prison used to be a maximum security prison, now a long detention prison where detainees spend at least 20 years of detention.

For this reason detainees are involved in different projects.

The prison has an acting company, a well known tailor’s laboratory and educational courses.

Every day 22 out of 130 detainees leave the prison to go to work, four of them work as cooks.

With the arrival of the new director Maria Grazia Giampiccolo that believes in a total reintegration of the detainees and an excellent collaboration with the Penitentiary Police force, it has been put in place a collaboration with Slow Food to turn the kitchen of the prison in a Master Food centre.

This is the most innovative project ever realized in a prison in Italy.

Cuisine and wine testing courses are making the detainees more aware of their origins giving them the opportunity of acquiring new skills to build a new future.
